Her writing career began after she discovered that she didn't have what it takes to be a scientist and shuffled sideways into scientific and medical editing. She lives in the northeast of Scotland, about a mile or so from the hamlet in which her great-great-grandmother, Jane Renshaw, lived and brought up eight children.
