Winter, a six months inclemency with temperatures of -5 to -35 Fahrenheit, gives her plenty of time to write as she recovers from cross country skiing at Izaak Walton Inn at the south end of Montana's Glacier National Park or across the frozen slough outside the north windows of her snug cottage in Flaxton. A favorite reading spot is the observation car on Amtrak's Empire Builder, her most frequent train journey taking her from Minot west to Portland where Powell's Books keeps her intrigued as she waits for her connection to Amtrak's Coast Starlight south to San Jose and Salinas to visit with her children and grand children. Each year her next destination is LAX, the doorway to adventures beyond the borders of her home country.
