She received the Association for Korean Music Research Prize in 2012, Charles Seeger Prize in 2010, and the James T. Koetting Prize in 2008 for her work in graduate papers. Lee earned her BM in music history/musicology and piano at University of Michigan, her MA in ethnomusicology at University of Washington, and her PhD in ethnomusicology at Harvard University in 2012.
