He was a classical open scholar of Keble College, Oxford, trained for ordination at Cranmer Hall, Durham, and has a PhD in New Testament from Sheffield University. In his previous parish, he was also Bishop’s Adviser on Ageing. Before ordination, he worked briefly for the Inner London Probation Service and before going to university he tried to be a schoolmaster. He holds the unfashionable view that God wants whole human beings, not just Christians. He is a member of the General, Municipal and Boilermakers Trade Union.
