Under his leadership, the club adopted full contact sparring (before MMA). He became an NRA Certified Firearms Instructor in 1986 and created his business AllSafe Defense System. This allowed him to combine defensive firearms with unarmed self-defense training. In 1990, Mr. Johnston was appointed a Training Counselor by the NRA and began training instructors.
