She came of age in the early 60s working as an emergency room nurse in Birmingham at the height of the civil rights struggle. She later worked as a midwife in a refugee camp in Bangladesh and as a home health nurse in the mountains of northern Pakistan. She claims a unique perspective on the commonality of the human condition, a perspective brought to bear in her first novel, a story about people that might have been set anywhere.
