His mother, Clayteen Harwell Gray, moved him and his sister to Mississippi at very young ages to get them away from the violence of the city life, only to suffer poverty in Mississippi while struggling to make ends meet. Clayteen kept Andrew and his young sister in church and into their schoolwork so that they would not find any reason to hang out on the streets and get into trouble.
