She was born with a thirst for knowledge, but her parents insisted that school was not necessary for girls, who would never be more than just wives and mothers. Refusing to work all her life on the farm, under rules of drunken parents who often beat her without explanation, she ran away at age twelve. She ran alongside the river, which wrapped itself around the foot of several mountains, and reached a city on the west end of the island. By perseverance and her ability to work, she made a better life for herself. Some years later, she went back to the old farm and rescued her sisters and brothers from their enslavement. Today, Jacqueline lives in California, where she studied real estate, interior decorating, and creative writing.vizualizați mai puține
