During this time, he served in both Navy and Army Reserve programs. After attending graduate school at the University of New Mexico, he entered the U.S. Navy as a result of an Army call-up for the Berlin Crisis. Captain Standish served twenty-one years as a career naval officer. After retiring from the Navy, he worked an additional twenty-one years in Navy shipbuilding programs.
