Born in Waardhuizen, he was best known for his books about the Second Boer War in South Africa, including The Lion of Modderspruit (1900), The Hero of Spionkop (1901), The Scout of Christiaan de Wet (1902), The Victor of Nooitgedacht (1903) and The Settler of South-West Africa (1904). He was also inspired by European history and wrote biographies on Jean Calvin (John Calvin), Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, Gustaaf II Adolf of Sweden, and many others. Penning died in Utrecht at the age of 72.
BENJAMIN SHEPHERD BERRINGTON (1845-1934) was an English linguist, author and translator of books from the Dutch language into English.
