He followed the family tradition into brass bands. He enlisted in the Welsh Guards Band before deciding to follow a career in teaching. He graduated in history from London University.
He has been a teacher, a senior lecturer in a college of higher education, a headmaster, and one of Her Majestys Inspectors of Schools. On leaving the inspectorate he became an educational consultant, which has taken him to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, South Africa and the Caribbean.
