Born in Inverie, Scotland, he was the son of James Skene of Rubislaw, a Scottish lawyer and amateur artist, and Jane Forbes, the youngest child of Sir William Forbes, 6th Baronet of Pitsligo. Skene lived for twenty years in the “east” and served as British consul in Aleppo from March 1855 to about 1877. He was the author of several books, including Anadol: The Last Home of the Faithful (1853), The Frontier Lands of the Christian and the Turk, Comprising Travel in the Regions of the Lower Danube in 1850 and 1851 (1853) and The Book of Pluscarden (1880). Skene died in Geneva, Switzerland in 1886, aged 74.vizualizați mai puține
