He said it explained a lot. Along with his love for baseball, his fascination with the heavens began in early childhood. After graduate school in physics and astronomy at UCLA, and after a brief stint at Santa Monica Community College, Jerry, in 1976, began a long teaching career at Santa Rosa Junior College. Under his leadership, the astronomy program at SRJC flourished, becoming the largest community college astronomy program in the state. A gifted teacher, Jerry was known for his inspiring lectures, his voice (he never used a mike) carrying well outside the lecture hall.
In the 1990s, Jerry shifted his focus from the heavens to the Earth. He completed a doctorate in Environmental Studies at Union College, began to teach environmental science, and founded SRJC’s Institute for Environmental Education.
Jerry was an avid skier, a licensed pilot, a scuba diver, an oil painter, and a lover of chocolate. He ran four marathons, and, until a few weeks before he died of Multiple Systems Atrophy on October 13, 2009, Jerry could often be seen at AT&T Park with his son, Keith, cheering on the Giants.vizualizați mai puține
