They were both born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, where Gerry taught at three high schools in and around Detroit for twenty years. He was asked to be a consultant for the Michigan Department of Education for twelve years, and was an adjunct professor at Wayne State University in Detroit for forty-seven years.
