He was Professor of History at the University of Aberdeen where a prize is awarded each year in his name. He was the author of The Reign of Elizabeth, 1558-1603, which was published in 1936 as Volume 8 of The Oxford History of England series. His 1926 work The Art of History, though now superseded, was the first important scholarly consideration of Enlightenment historiography of the twentieth century.
