Perry was born in the East Riding and sent to St. Peter's, York, where Alcuin was headmaster in the eighth century. He trained as a journalist in Hull and then worked in press relations in London. In the seventies he dropped out to live on an old boat in Greece and began to frequent the monasteries on Mount Athos, where he converted to the Orthodox faith. Nicholas is co-author with Loreto Echeverria of Under the Heel of Mary (Routledge 1990), a major study of political manipulation of the cult of the Virgin Mary.
